2013 GLAAD Media Awards: ‘Perks Of Being A Wallflower’, ‘The New Normal’, ‘American Horror Story’

Jennifer Lawrence andHarvey Weinstein presented the inaugural Advocate for Change Award to former President Bill Clinton at tonight’s 24th GLAAD Media Awards held at the JW Marriott in LA. Attorney Steve Warren received the Stephen F. Kolzak award from Charlize Theron and Leonardo DiCaprio while Summit’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and NBC’s The New Normal topped film and TV awards. Here’s the full list of winners:

- I didn’t care for Wallflower. Talk about overrated on every level- bad direction, horrible script, sappy dialogue, and Ezra Miller is the only actor to give a decent performance.

I like Bill Clinton just as much as any other gay liberal/progressive does. But to give the man responsible for both DADT and DOMA – the two most regressive, anti-gay pieces of public policy written in modern times – an “Outstanding Advocate for Change” award seems utterly ludicrous. A far better choice would have been Hilary Clinton for her amazing “LGBT Rights ARE Human Rights” speech in Geneva. Now THAT is what I call “advocating for change” is all about.

I’m sorry – I’m glad he recently came out and said that his supporting DOMA was wrong – I love the guy in a lot of ways – but Bill Clinton was no advocate for change for gays. From him we had Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and as part of Dick Morris-authored triangulation we had DOMA in 1996 – craven, political, and awful. I’m thrilled that both he and Hillary have come out for gay marriage in 2013, when it’s clearly evident the public tide has turned, but where was he on gay issues beforehand? Ever since his administration was rebuffed on gays in the military, he fled from gay rights. DOMA doesn’t even get mentioned in his 1000 page autobiography.

I don’t know which FOB engineered this award, but kudos. Bizarre choice, GLAAD.

not a fan of gay marriage myself but, GLAAD is giving an award to a guy who passed a law banning them from getting married and as late as 2010 was still against it and since then he also has “evolved” to accept it?! the gay rights community will “go down” as the weakest advocacy campaign since save the trees.

- Never a fan of Bill Clinton, but I hardly think he’s an enemy of the gays. You couldn’t have gays openly serving in the military i 2013 if it weren’t for his Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy that served as a bridge between then and now.
  
  The irony of him signing the Defense of Marriage Act is that he never had any use for his own marriage. Nor do I think he cared about other people’s marriages or relationships either when he was banging, or raping, married women. Can’t wait for NOW to offer him their Advocate For Change Award in order to make the liberal circle of hypocrisy complete.

Other than being the guy that signed the Defense of Marriage Act and the guy who implemented “Do’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and ignoring the fact he was against same sex marriage until recently, you have no great champion of gay rights in America.

Ironic that the man who signed DOMA when politically convenient is being heralded. Says a lot about how these ‘professional gay organizations’ work. It’s all j about celebrities and money… I realize why but principles don’t matter, especially now that everyone who’s nit an extreme righty needs a gay best friend

Looks like GLAAD is out of touch with the real gay world just as much as Hollywood. The real change and awards should be going to producers of online programming with such web series like Drama Queens, Free Fall, AD-TV and contemporary gay lifestyle programming coming from a very diverse gay spectrum which includes series written and produced by gay Blacks, Latins/Hispanics and Asians via they own voices and aesthetics. I don’t understand why gays have not learned from African Americans and the complete confusion and destruction assimilation has done for the “community” with the results only to benefit a few while “the mainstream” makes millions and take power. At the end of the day, it seems like this event is a fundraiser and a very fine tuned guest list of presenters and acceptees. Not GLAAD but SAD.

I am a 55 year old gay man, who grew up in a small town in the mid-west, President Clinton said the word, gay, aids and homosexual more as a candidate in 1992 than any former presidents before him combined. That position was politically risky. Reagan and Bush ignored the aids crisis that started on their watch and cozied up to right wing nuts like Falwell who promoted quarantining all gay men in camps to stop the spread of aids. That is the climate Clinton came into in 93….he couldn’t even get the ban on gays in the military lifted….saying you were for gay marriage was the same as saying your were for child molesting…get real guys…I wish he hadn’t signed DOMA, but if he hadn’t the righties would have tried to put a ban on it in the constitution….the gay community is a microcosm of the larger community why would you expect GLAAD to be any different than straight elitist groups.

- That’s all well and good, Ken Woods. But if he was so personally torn about his decision then he certainly didn’t need to campaign on DOMA (which he did). An incumbent riding a great economic record who was from the South? He didn’t need any extra political capital by being anti-gay. He was simply a self-interested opportunist, like most politicians. And if he was privately supportive, then maybe in the 12 years since he left office he could have become an advocate. But he didn’t. Heck, maybe we should award Reagan posthumously.

Only criteria for winning these “awards” is that you or your show must be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or “questioning”. You don’t actually need to be the slighted bit talented in any way, shape or form. No way in hell does anybody straight, or gay, believe that The New Normal is an outstanding comedy series. Outstandingly bad, maybe.

- AMEN!! Ryan Murphy burps and GLAAD stumbles all over itself to give him awards. If THE NEW NORMAL (and GLEE, for that matter) was created by a straight guy, they would be flipping out and launching one of those silly GLAAD Media Alerts complaining about gross stereotyping. The show is one offensive, two dimensional caricature after another. It doesn’t do right by gay men, black women, adoptive parents or anyone else for that matter. GLAAD exists for one reason, to kiss the butts of celebrigays and their hangers on. Along with the HRC, they could care less about anything that goes on outside their high value donor bubble.

Bill Clinton, the man who authored both DADT and DOMA, getting an “Advocacy for Change” award? What the hell is this? It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything this ridiculously Orwellian. GLAAD should be ashamed of itself – ASHAMED. And Bill Clinton deserves, on this particular issue, nothing but scorn and excoriation – NOT a friggin’ award.
