Merlin- The Wicked Day-recap
Merlin enjoys the prospect of the newly come circus troupe. It’s Arthur feast day. The showmen have a special gift for Arthur. The special gift is of three daggers. The troupe suggest to the crowd he appear. Prince Arthur accepts the challenge.Arthur urges the King to rest but the King says he won’t miss the son’s anniversary. The dagger thrower spins Prince Arthur turning on a wheel and throws daggers at him. They gag his mouth with an apple. Merlin watches the third throw, which is incredibly close. Gwenevere can barely watch. The third dagger is slowed by Merlin just in case and hits the apple in Arthur’s mouth.
Prince Arthur shakily smiles in victory but the thrower says to his minion that the sedative in the apple will take effect by nightfall. Prince Arthur retires but tries to leave his chamber and Merlin comments he is not wearing trousers.
Arthur staggers in a sleepy state to the king’s bedside. He sits down alone. But he sees the man approach and almost attack in a chalice reflection and raises his sword to defend. When a sleepy Arthur is bested the King raises his steel to defend the son and then is almost killed. In one last breath the attacker raises the poisoned dagger to Uther as he is killed. Uther gasps.
Gaius says the blade has touched his heart. The assassin is from Odin’s land. Uther has been mortally wounded, Morgana is informed. The spy inside the court (Arthur’s uncle) tells Morgana that opportunities might prove fruitful. As Arthur’s uncle he also inherits royal power with Uther’s death.
Guinevere nurses Uther at his bedside. Arthur wrestles with the idea of life without Uther.
Merlin watches the kingdom citizens stand a candle light vigil outside the palace walls. Arthur accepts that nothing can be done but says there is a way t heal his father. With magic. Gaius says this is a desperate hope. Gaius says that Arthur shouldn’t let Merlin risk an aging spell to appear as a magician. Merlin says his attitude towards magic can be a force for good.
He says if it works the world will b changed forever. Gaius says Merlin is playing a dangerous game. Merlin says maybe this is his chance to change that. Merlin says there is an old man in a forest that can help him. But Merlin says they two will have to find him to save Uther. Arthur says they will ride at first light.
Arthur informs his uncle he will use magic. The spy argues to Arthur he cannot use magic. He says perhaps it is Uther’s time. Arthur says his mind is made up. They ride in the woods to a charcoal maker’s hut. Arthur pretends to wait and watch the horses. Arthur say to scream like a big girl if there’s any trouble. Arthur knocks on the door and Merlin races to “appear” as the old man.
Merlin pretends he needs to go relieve himself and chants the spell. Merlin turns into the crotchety old wizard who last visited the castle. Arthur breaks a pot and Merlin insults him as a clumsy fool. Merlin guesses Arthur wants him to heal his father.
Arthur says the price is that Uther’s life will cost is that wizardry is allowed to openly be practiced that when he is King he won’t have to live in fear. Arthur says he will meet the old wizard at the lower gate at nightfall.
The old wizard get crotchety so he can change back into Merlin and get back outside. Merlin stumbles out of the brush after taking the antidote. Gaius criticizes the plan.
Arthur consults with his uncle. The spy visits Morgana and says the talisman will reverse any healing magic tenfold. The man says Arthur will never forgive himself. Meanwhile Arthur goes looking for his servant Merlin while the spell is being prepared.
Morgana says a broken prince will be a terrible King. Gaius says that William of Cambria was a better healer than anyone but Merlin grabs the spell and runs. Guenevere catches the spy coming back and checking out the room of Uther. Arthur’s uncle places the talisman around Uther’s neck.
Merlin the old wizard appears and Arthur tries to lead his the hidden way to the palace and into uther;s room. Merlin accuses him of going back on hsi word already. The old wizard walks too slow and Prince Arthur rides him piggyback through the pace, kicking Arthur to go faster like a donkey.
At Uther’s room, Arthur dismisses the guards. At Uther’s bedside Prince Arthur has second thoughts. Merlin says magic is all around him and woven into the very fabric of the world. He wonders if it is the right thing to do. Merlin says he wishes only to show Arthur that magic is good and then he will see him in a different light.
Merlin begins the spell and burns herbs and pronounces magic words. The spell works and Uther comes back to health but then the talisman activates and uther sinks into death quickly. Arthur realizes Merlin has killed him and rushes Merlin who sends Arthur flying into the air and flees.
Gaius is sympathetic but little consolation. He says the king is dead. Merlin is crushed. Gaius produces the talisman and the enchantment reversed the effects of the healing Arthur has turned against magic forever.
The spy, Arthur’s uncle, comes to tell Morgana that Uther is dead but she felt it already. King Uther is laid in state to rest and only Merlin and Gaius know the truth. Merlin says “this is all my fault”. Gaius says uther’s spirit died when she broke his heart.
Gaius says he must look to the future. Gaius says Arthur will be under more pressure now he is king. Prince Arthur opens the vault doors and sees Merlin on a the floor and says it is a new day. Arthur says to Merlin that he is a loyal friend.
The trumpets blow and the people rush the castle steps. Arthur is crowned king and invested with Camelot’s powers while the uncle and the court and Gwen and Merlin watch.
