August 25, 2014 - Variety.com - Alexander Vlahos (Merlin's Mordred) to star in Versailles
PARIS — “Vikings” thesp George Blagden is set to play Louis XIV in “Versailles,” the high-profile series directed by “Yves Saint Laurent” helmer Jalil Lespert for French pay TV network Canal Plus.
Repped by Zodiak Rights and produced by Paris-based Capa Drama, the English-language “Versailles” will also star Alexander Vlahos (“Merlin,” “Privates”), Dominique Blanc and Amira Casar. Completing the international cast will be Tygh Runyan, Stuart Bowman, Noémie Schmidt, Evan Williams, Anna Brewster, Sarah Winter, Anatole Taubman, Lizzie Brocheré, Elisa Lasowski, Maddison Jaizani, Peter Hudson and Gilly Gilchrist.
“Versailles” was created by Simon Mirren (“Criminal Minds”) and David Wolstencroft (“The Escape Artist”), who also serve as showrunners and exec producers on the series, along with Claude Chelli (“Braquo”) at Capa Drama and Anne Thomopoulos (“Rome,” “Borgia”). It’s co-produced by Fabrice de la Patelliere at Canal Plus Creation Originale, Capa Drama, Zodiak and Incendo.
The key crew is led by set designer Katia Wyszkop (“Saint-Laurent,” “Farewell My Queen”), costume designer Madeline Fontaine (“Amelie”) and cinematographer Pierre-Yves Bastard (“Maison Close”).
Series, comprising 10 one-hour episodes, opens in 1667. Louis is 28 years old and the sole commander of his kingdom following his mother’s death. Burdened by insecurity brought on memories of his childhood trauma — a bitter coup attempt known as “the Fronde” — he creates a trap at Versailles to ensnare and disempower the nobles who threaten him.
The first season sees Louis evolve from a young King into an absolute monarch, a 17th century rock star with the mind of Machiavelli.
The show also delves into Louis XIV’s ambivalent relationship with his younger brother, an openly gay warrior who was known as Monsieur, and the king’s affair with his sister-in-law, Henrietta of England, explained Claude Chelli, head of Capa Drama.

19. Dragoon the Great
In legends, Merlin is an old man while Arthur is a boy, and the show pays homage to this whenever Merlin transforms himself into the grumpy old Dragoon – Colin Morgan is absolutely hilarious in the role, and it’s the only chance Merlin gets to really speak his mind to the other characters.

15. Gwaine
The hair, the beard, the swagger… is there anything not to love (or swoon over) about this character? It is no wonder that when Gwaine entered the show swords blazing he instantly cemented himself as a favorite in the hearts of the fans.14. One word: Dolma
Just when you think Colin Morgan can’t get any better, he goes and pulls off a hilariously spectacular performance as Dolma. We’re pretty sure Colin’s portrayal of the old, rather sassy sorceress will go down in Merlin history as a fan favorite, and in our opinion, it was even more awkwardly hilarious than the Dragoon scenes.13. Alexander Vlahos as Mordred
Asa Butterfield’s Mordred was the perfect blend of cute and creepy. But Alexander Vlahos has blown us away with his performance in series 5 of Merlin, and we wish he’d been included earlier so we could have seen much more of him. Here’s to that Mordred: The Lost Years spin-off, eh?!
12. Morgana’s evil smirk
We love evil Morgana and her crazy hair, but when she turned evil, it was a sad day for us all – until we realized that it meant a season of Katie McGrath smirking evilly at the camera every time a scene ended. “Hey guys,” she seemed to say with her narrowed eyes, “in case you missed the memo, I’M EVIL NOW, KK?” Good times.11. Rupert Young is another actor who we wish we could see more of, but he has made a number of guest appearances on prominent shows like Shameless andPrimeval. But a must watch for Sir Leon fans is the music video for the British band Worship’s song “House of Glass.” You get to see him up close and involved in a bit of romance, which is sadly not something he ever got to do on Merlin (though we’ll never give up on Leon/Gwen).
Santiago Cabrera
Heroes (2008)
Santiago Cabrera is one of the most active Merlin cast members, and we could have picked a lot of different roles to include on this list. But we went with Heroes, because if you like knights and magic, chances are you’ll like superheroes and badass special abilities. In the first (and best) season of Heroes, Santiago Cabrera played Isaac the painter, and it is a very different role from Lancelot, let us tell you. But he is brilliant, and there is so much mystery surrounding the character, you’ll find yourself glued to the screen!

Merlin stars Eoin Macken and Alexander Vlahos have responded to news of the show ending.Macken wrote on Twitter that he had "loved" being a part of the BBC fantasy drama, though appeared to imply that he was not entirely satisfied with the most recent episodes.

"For the [people] sad about Merlin, it's true - this is the end of it," the Irish actor - who plays Sir Gwaine - wrote. "Sorry about that... if I'd my way the knights would be flying superheroes."
However, when a fan suggested that the fifth and final series had "failed", Macken replied: "Well, I loved Merlin and everything about it and everybody... BUT I agree with what u just said about this series."

Fellow Merlin star Alexander Vlahos - who joined the show this year as Mordred - also used Twitter to comment on the end of the series.
"To those mourning the loss of Merlin from our screens, I guarantee the last 5 eps are something special," Vlahos said. "Proud to have been a part of it."
Merlin continues this Saturday (December 1) at 8pm on BBC One with latest episode 'With All My Heart'.

Samantha Fox joins stars of Harry Potter, Primeval, Doctor Who, James Bond at MCM Birmingham Comic Con & Memorabilia
Former pop star and pin-up Samantha Fox is to join the stars of Harry Potter, Primeval, Doctor Who and James Bond at the upcoming MCM Birmingham Comic Con & Memorabilia on March 16 and 17.
The Comic Con and Memorabilia events are held side by side at the NEC, Birmingham. Comic Con visitors get into Memorabilia free of charge. Children under 10 get in free if accompanied by a paying adult.
Listed below are some of the star guests lined up for the shows.
Potter Personalities: Chris Rankin, who plays Percy Weasley in six of the blockbuster Harry Potter films, Steffan Rhodri, who was Reg Cattermole in Deathly Hallows and Hugh Mitchell, who appears as Gryffindor student Colin Creevey in The Order Of The Phoenix. Steffan is also famous for playing Dave in hit comedy Gavin & Stacey, and recently won plaudits as the voice of Drippy in acclaimed video game Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch.
Primeval stars Andrew Lee Potts (Connor Temple), Hannah Spearritt (Abby Maitland), also famous as an original member of S Club 7, and Lucy Brown, who played both Claudia Brown and Jenny Lewis.
For Doctor Who fans there's Colin Baker, who starred as the sixth incarnation of The Doctor, Nicola Bryant, who played his companion Peri Brown and Sophie Aldred, who was The Doctor's companion Ace. Other Doctor Who guests include Frazer Hines, who played Jamie McCrimmon in no fewer than 117 episodes of the show; Terry Molloy, best known as the Daleks' villainous creator Davros, and stuntman Jimmy Vee, who has played a host of monsters and aliens in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Bond girl and Avengers star Honor Blackman. Other Bond girls at Memorabilia include Shirley Eaton (Goldfinger), Lana Wood (Diamonds Are Forever) and Maryam d'Abo (The Living Daylights).
Gary Dourdan, best known for portraying Warrick Brown in eight seasons of the massively popular CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
A trio of bold knights from Merlin will be at comic con: Alexander Vlahos (Mordred), Rupert Young (Sir Leon) and Eoin Macken (Sir Gwain).
Canadian actor Connor Jessup, best known for his role as Ben Mason in the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series Falling Skies.
Emmy-winning Italian actress Greta Scacchi, whose credits include Robert Altman's The Player, White Mischief, Presumed Innocent and Broken Trail.
Michael Beck, best known for his role as Swan in Walter Hill's 1979 cult classic The Warriors. Also appeared in hit sci-fi show Babylon 5.
Oliver! Reunion: Oscar-nominated Ron Moody, best known as Fagin in Lionel Bart's stage and film musical Oliver!, Mark Lester, who played Oliver Twist and Shani Wallis, who played Sikes' long-suffering girlfriend Nancy.
Masters of Horror: Best known by his stage name John Morghen, Giovanni Lombardo Radice achieved cult status with his roles in 1980's Italian splatter movies such as Cannibal Ferox, City Of The Living Dead and Cannibal Apocalypse. He'll be joined at Memorabilia by scream queen Madeline Smith (The Vampire Lovers, Frankenstein And The Monster from Hell) and Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist).
Derren Nesbit, best known as SS Major von Hapen in Where Eagles Dare. Derren's credits also include The Prisoner, Doctor Who and The Saint.
Adrian Hall and Heather Ripley, who played Jeremy and Jemima Potts in Ian Fleming's much-loved musical film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
British TV classics: Jan Harvey and Stephen Yardley, who starred as Jan Howard and Ken Masters in Howard's Way, and Judy Cornwall, best known for playing Daisy in long-running sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

'Merlin' star Alexander Vlahos: 'Final episodes are powerful, brutal'

Merlin star Alexander Vlahos has praised the show's final episodes.Vlahos - who assumed the role of Mordred for the BBC fantasy drama's final series - revealed that he is "happy" with how the finale "ties the five years together".

In a Radio Times web-chat, the actor said: "I am happy with the ending. The scripts are very powerful, heartfelt and brutally honest. It... honours the fans and the legend."
The 24-year-old added that he was "a little surprised with some aspects of the ending" - which will air on BBC One on Christmas Eve.
"But I think that was because... the writers have been brave in what they want to achieve with it," he explained.
Merlin's Katie McGrath (Morgana) recently told Digital Spy that the show's final two-parter "really answer all the questions that have been posed throughout the past five years" while Bradley James (Arthur) also toldDS that he was "happy" with how the series ends.
Merlin continues this Saturday at 8.15pm on BBC One with new episode 'The Drawing of the Dark'.

TRUTH OR DARE – The Review

The premise of Truth or Dare almost seems like a bad joke, the kind of idea for a movie that only shows up in fiction when mocking lame-brained movie plots. There have been a thousand jokes about innocent games, objects, or animals twisted to sinister ends, but this movie actually goes ahead and makes that its main idea. This is, indeed, about a murderous game of truth or dare. And it is supposed to be taken seriously!
Let’s back up and explain a bit. Truth or Dare follows a group of college-age British kids as they go to a party being held at a remote mansion. The party is in celebration of the birthday of Felix (Tom Kane), an outcast whom some of them had humiliated at a different party several months earlier. One would think this should be a giant red flag, but they answer his invitation anyway for the free booze. The group consists of nice girl Gemma (Florence Hall), her jerk ex-boyfriend Chris (Jack Gordon), catty rich girl Eleanor (Jennie Jacques), her reserved boyfriend Paul (Liam Boyle), and nervous drug dealer Luke (Alexander Vlahos).
Upon arriving at a rundown cabin on the grounds of the estate, they discover that Felix isn’t there, his older brother Justin (David Oakes) in his place. Justin then proceeds to hold the group hostage, revealing that Felix is in fact dead, having committed suicide. Justin believes that one of them is responsible, and instigates a night full of terror and torture.
The characters in this movie are sublimely stupid, and that’s even when holding them to the diminished standard of suspended disbelief that I’m willing to grant a low-rent horror movie. Luke, in particular, does absolutely nothing that makes any kind of sense throughout the whole run time. While Justin binds the other hostages, he keeps Luke free as a “helper,” and there are half a dozen moments where he could do something but doesn’t, for extremely contrived reasons.
Really, though, none of the characters live beyond anything more than the “types” they’re established as. Gemma is good, Eleanor is a bitch, Chris is a dick, etc, etc. None of them are particularly likable, having already been established as bullies, so there isn’t much tension over their fates. In fact, I felt triumphant at most of their deaths, which is kind of exactly the opposite of the way I think I was supposed to feel.
Justin doesn’t make much of a mark as the villain of the piece. Even with his Matthew Goode-like looks, Oakes doesn’t invigorate him with much else than generic intimidating looming. Every horror movie killer needs a “hook,” and his is a device that can feed either water or battery acid to a person. It doesn’t really make for anything besides suspense-less scenes, where you know exactly whether or not a victim is gonna get their insides eaten or not.
The movie would be a completely generic in a harmless way if it weren’t for an extremely strange turn that it takes towards the end. There’s a “twist” that one of the characters is in fact responsible, in a quite direct way, for Felix hanging himself. Right after this, said character then proceeds to revel in their badness… and they are whom we are meant to root for. It’s such a bizarre about-face. Director Robert Heath might be trying to play with the conventions of the genre here, making the audience question who it’s “proper” to cheer on in this situation. The problem is that any thematic concerns are overwhelmed by the fact that it’s just so oppressively ugly that there’s no real motivation for one to think it over.
In fact, a good deal of the film is ugly. It perpetuates the terrible idea that picked-on kids get what’s coming to them for being “weird.” I know we generally don’t take horror movies to task for irresponsible social messages, but Truth or Dare isn’t even scary or entertaining enough to let me ignore it, sit back, and enjoy the ride. It’s a wretched little film, on every level of its construction.
