The cobbled streets of 17th-century Paris echo to the tread of boots and the clang of sword against scabbard. The air is heavy with the acrid smell of powder from the newly invented flintlock guns in the nearby garrison; the majestic soaring of cathedral bells all but drowns out the yelping of hungry dogs and the whinnying of impatient horses.
The locals scamper into doorways as four handsome young swashbucklers stride through their midst. In the French capital during the reign of Louis XIII, law and order is more a dream than a reality. But when Athos, Aramis and Porthos - the three bravest and most distinguished members of the royal guard - and their friend D'Artagnan are around, only the most foolhardy would dare take them on.

This is the setting for The Musketeers, BBC1's lavish new ten-episode series based on the stories of Alexandre Dumas. They charted the exploits of D'Artagnan, a young nobleman who befriends the three heroes when he travels to Paris to join the Musketeers of the Guard, the elite soldiers commanded by Captain Treville charged with protecting King Louis and Queen Anne.
In reality, the Czech capital Prague is doubling for Paris in the year 1625, because the magnificent architecture resembles France's grandest. Deep in the countryside 33 miles away, a vast set comprising a Paris street and square, a barracks and many interiors has been built in the village of Doksany, with the indigenous population of 369 almost doubled by the actors and technicians.
