NBC Picks Up BBC's "Merlin"

June 22, 2009 08:42 pm CDT
While American networks often try to remake hit British television programs, NBC has picked up a new BBC series which will go untouched. For the first time in 30 years, an American network will air a British drama when "Merlin" premieres Sunday at 8pm on NBC.
In the fantasy series, "Merlin" takes place before the golden age of Camelot and follows the early years of the mythical wizard. Anthony Head ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") stars as a king who has outlawed magic, while John Hurt is the voice of the Great Dragon. The series, like the CW series "Smallville," follows a young Prince Arthur and his mentor Merlin.
The first season of "Merlin" consists of thirteen episodes, which first began airing in the UK in 2008. A second season is already filming.
"It's probably quite difficult to recast this one and remake it in an American way," said star Bradley James, who plays Prince Arthur, to TV Guide. "Hopefully it goes over well and it will be worth NBC's while. We'll keep our fingers crossed."
